"Srebrenica-main"The Sarajevo Film Festival was founded in 1995 in the midst of the Balkan War with the objective of distracting the population during the long siege of 1992. Today, twenty years later, we found a different festival. War is a protagonist, through a dozen documentaries and feature films that serve as catharsis for the lived drama.

Sorting the issue of war in Bosnia is hard even today. It could be useful for the atonement of the country, that cinema would reflect what we are today. Current portraits are especially interesting in societies in the midst of reconstruction like the Yugoslavian one. It is a society that needs to transcend the horror and darkness. It is on the look for references that dwell with their same issues and contemporary challenges.

Paradoxically, despite the painful remembrance of war, the Yugoslavian folk have made of their war history their main touristic attraction. In cities like Sarajevo, Belgrade and Mostar, it is especially significant. There, souvenirs and guided visits have war as their main ingredient. In this situation, one asks itself what do Bosnian, Serbian or Croatians see when they look at themselves today.

The memory of Tito’s Yugoslavia contrasts with the difficulties of a population that desires to “be European”. This is a society that has been forced to migrate or to live under precarious conditions because of the lack of employment.Today, the ex-Yugoslavia lives a new challenge, that of being the anteroom to Europe for thousands of Syrian and Afghan immigrants.

Even when there are no documentaries or feature films to show it, they are becoming the parapet of the massive exodus heading to central Europe in the face of the unsupportive policies of the EU.

The volume of immigrants that sleep every night in parks or parking lots in the Yugoslavian cities does not stop growing, defying the humanitarian capacities of countries that have with their own consolidation and redefining enough challenges as to turn into refugee camps.

Is it a cruel coincidence, or are the Balkans for a special reason the chosen scenery of the mayor international conflicts or the last century?
